From a domain name to an email inbox

This article, which follows the article “From a domain name to a website,” expands on the topic of domain names to describe how incoming email for a domain name is routed. A web server for a domain name isn’t required to receive email for the same domain name and this article explains in simple terms (hopefully) how a domain name can be set up so that its website is on one server while its incoming email is received on another server.


From a domain name to a website

People often think of a domain name and a website as being the same thing, but there are actually several steps involved in relating a domain name that you can own to the web server that hosts a website. In this article I give a brief (and greatly simplified) description of how that actually works.

Sony sends mass spam

This morning I received what looked like a typical spam email with the regular tell-tale signs: ugly formatting (plain text in this instance), grammatical and syntax errors, and long cryptic web addresses (URLs). It didn’t seem unusual at all until I saw that Sony Electronics actually sent it.

Keep those old, ugly photos of family history!

Even if an old family photo looks in bad shape, it might be possible to recover a good picture from it later. Here’s a before-and-after view of a family photo (sibling, cousins and aunts of mine) I recently recovered:

2009 H1N1 flu (swine flu) pandemic

Some facts:

  • On June 11, 2009, the World Health Organization raised the alert level to “6”, “Pandemic” (WHO statement)
  • There are no CDC recommendations related to H1N1 for anyone to avoid travel.
  • WHO considers it “prudent for people who are ill to delay international travel.”
  • Gauze masks can substantially reduce spread of infection from the wearer, but provide virtually no antiviral protection for the wearer.
